Why yes, I do have a regular set of just a couple drinks I always get at Starbucks…..but you, recently-transferred barista, do not know know what they are! I find it cute and amusing that you try and guess at what they are, but you and the manager both have had poor luck calling my shots (no pun intended). You will in time (if sufficient enough attention is paid to them, although I do appreciate you enjoying the humor on my t-shirts), so don’t look so discouraged!

Prioritization of drinks:

Venti bold coffee

‘Cause most mornings, I just want a kick of some caffeine, and I like my coffee kick-me-in-the-ass strong. Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ Donuts just can’t match up strength-wise.

Quad venti soy latte

Two shots of espresso in a venti latte is just a joke, so I double that and use soy milk to cut the bitter edge off a tad1, not because I have dairy issues or whatnot. I think that still confuses some of the baristas, as if I ever order soy in a drink with whipped cream on top, they always ask if I still want the whipped cream. This is usually ordered on the mornings that I a) have a free drink coupon, or b) have had too light of a breakfast to get a full coffee and not end up with the shakes from low blood sugar.

Quad venti mocha

These are for the mornings I’ve had no breakfast. All that crazy mocha flavoring is so damn loaded with sugar, I can’t get low blood sugar issues despite the four shots of espresso. It’s also one of their few drinks that still tastes okay with four shots of espresso in it2.

Seasonals/conditionals

These are usually my afternoon drinks. Totally dictated by the weather/temperature/alignment of the planets. It’s no use predicting what I will drink at these hours (unless I’m in a foul mood3). The three above are probably 99%-guaranteed during the morning hours.

A couple of the other baristas are aware enough to realize what my regulars are, but must know better than (or not bother) to predict them. They just pick up on the changes to the regulars I request3,4. Like I said: you’ll get there! Eventually. I think. *shifty eyes*

P.S. It was just plain weird when you asked if I used to be a regular in West Seneca or Orchard Park, or one of the suburbs way down to the south. I never get that far south of the city for anything short of a roadtrip, let alone enough times to be a regular of anything. She could have swore that I was from there, however!

1I usually pull my own espressos on the short side so they’re not nearly so bitter. I suppose I could try and ask the baristas about doing that, but I don’t know if they have that much control over the machine during the extraction process.

2The dark cherry mocha also goes well. In fact, I’d say it actually tastes better with four shots of espresso to cut back on that ridiculous amount of sweetness in it. But like the white chocolate mocha with four shots of espresso? Bleagh! Disgusting!

3One of the couple cute baristas at the Starbucks I frequent totally noticed I was in a shitty mood one weekend evening while ordering a sort of “comfort food” style (aka chai tea latte) drink. I’m not one for being terribly readable emotion-wise through my face, but either it was that apparent or she just got used to reading me.

4The other of the cute baristas notices whenever I get my lattes with anything less than four shots of espresso. I mean shit, three shots is an easy day for me, and she’ll notice!

…I am totally ready for summer to be over. Let’s get on with the fall already.

Let’s get on with all the pretty changing of the leafs; all the brisk days and sweatshirts and long pants; all the coziness that develops as the temperature slows down and people slow down.

Let’s be done with the mosquitoes; be done with the uncomfortably humid days; be done with the nights that don’t cool down until 4am in the morning.

I have vivid memories of the fall from back in Minot. One stands out in particular: swinging around on the rope swing in my backyard, wearing jeans and a hoodie, laughing and talking with Aleasha-Rose from down the street. That memory must be almost 15 years old, but it really sticks with me.

I have none of those (well, besides the clothing) anymore. I’m aching for something just as powerful in my mind. This could potentially be my last autumn in Buffalo, depending on how things look if I finish my degree next summer.

Let me see what this city has to offer…

So after a nearly 4 month hiatus from even bothering to look at my coding, I sat down and cleaned up the parsing code I wrote way back when and got some subroutines going for it. Nothing too fancy, but it should discriminate satisfactorily between RIS and BiBTex formatted library exports (based upon file extension). I’ll probably throw in a screener to check the first line or two of the input file just to be on the safe side, but running on extension alone for now should be fine. Click on through for the code!

As I’ve already got the parser and uploader mashed together1, this piece won’t be hard to integrate in. Now it’s just time to write another subroutine or two for the other more common citation library formats, and this script will be ready to rock2!

Added perk: I totally just got my <pre> tags to wrap properly within my frames! Woohoo!
<perma-embed in CSS-file />

1I haven’t put that code up yet, as I got distracted by life in the interim. But, it’s totally functional. Fo’realz!

2Well, on Mac OS X and/or Unix systems at least. I need to verify and/or troubleshoot the script on Windows-based platforms, as I’m unsure how good the
uri_escape
and
File::Spec
are at respecting the different operating systems.

I ordered an extra drive cage from Antec a while ago to supplement the Antec 1200 that I am using as a case for my FreeNAS file server. However, it did not come with any of the screws necessary for either mounting the hard drives into the cage, or for mounting the drive cage into the computer tower. They may be more marketed as replacement units, but as I do not need an optical drive in my file server1, I wanted to expand the 3.5″ capacity of the whole server and mount an additional cage+fan assembly2. So naturally (as many a customer has done previously), after browsing the forums, I file a support ticket to ask for spare screws as it appears they send them out very readily.

Unfortunately, that was over a month ago that I submitted that ticket. It took nearly three weeks for the screw to finally show up, and that included a follow up email to inquire after the expected shipping period had lapsed (10 business days). When they did show, they were only the hard drive mounting screws. So awesome! I can mount the drives, but now the cage can slide around pretty freely. I submitted another follow up email, and they got the cage-to-case mounting screws sent off. I finally received those Wednesday or Thursday of this last week, and they weren’t even the correct screws. *facepalm*

They sent me eight thumb screws that secure the side panels to the computer tower. Alas, they look almost identical to the cage-to-case thumb screws (same size thumb heads, thread length, but the tower screws are black, while the cage screws are polished/chrome), but the thread pitch is completely off (tower screws use a higher thread pitch). I had to follow them up with another email, and hopefully I’ll be receiving the proper ones this time.

I offered to send the tower thumb screws back (as eight is a lot of extras), but they said to just keep them as spares, and they’d send out the new ones ASAP.

I’m not dissing the fact that they’re doing this completely out of their own pocket, but it is a mild nuisance to have to go through this much rigamarole to obtain the pieces I need. It won’t deter me from purchasing from Antec in the future at all3, but it will make me hesitant to contact customer support unless I really need to. Thankfully, all the products from them that I’m using at present are in the file server, so it should be running for an indeterminate period of time (I hope)!

1Everything is flash-upgradeable in the FreeNAS server at the moment. If I really need to get an optical drive to reinstall anything on the unit from hard media, I can just acquire one for relatively cheap. I’m looking at acquiring a Mac Mini w/Snow Leopard Server sometime this fall to server as a static HTPC for the TV (instead of using the aging MacBook Pro whenever I bring it home), so I will likely procure an external optical at the same time I purchase the new Mac (funds permitting; hoping for refurbs on sale).

2Also, because I’m a little OCD about presentation on stuff. The tower just doesn’t look quite right without confluent blue LED lighting along the entire front face; it’s an all or nothing deal folks! Frankly, I’d go nothing (I mean c’mon, it’s just a file server, to hide out of sight when possible) if it wasn’t pricier to buy four non-LED cages than one LED cage!

3I really do like their products. The Antec 1200, albeit a gaming case, is as quiet (if not quieter) as the Mac Pro (and that’s pretty fucking quiet)! The oversized Antec 850W power supply in it helps contribute to that quietness, as the larger footprint allows for larger components that are easier to dissipate the heat over. All-in-all, they were a minor premium to purchase, but well worth it so far!

Bear with me if you are coming here through a mobile device. <strike style="color:red;">I need to get used to how the plugin treats my HTML, as it appears my CSS header lines present in many of my posts is bleeding through as plain text. I’m going to have to work on that.</strike> In the meantime, back to experimentation at work, instead of geeking it up.

Update: Totally schooled the CSS file and got my text-indent and <code> customizations incorporated! I do believe I’ve ripped out those header-like <style> tags that I was using to improvise from all the relevant posts, so everything should look relatively kosher from a mobile device browser now.

Last night’s dream recollection was awfully brief, but vivid at the same time. It was solely composed of me pulling a huge (size of my fist) wad of hair out of the bathtub drain, looking at it in a bit of shock, and tossing it in the garbage.

Pretty sure it was my roommate’s because it was all red/amber as hers is, not to mention mine are nearly black (assuming any of my hairs get caught in the drain). It’s one of those things I check for post-shower, and am lucky to ever have to worry about clearing the drain filter.

This is really bizarre primarily because it’s one of her things she’s very fastidious about (and would like to expect from a roommate). That, and who has dreams of pulling hair out of the bathtub drain?!?

So in following up last night’s post, I’ve been riding on a mildly high on life kick lately. With the move finally being finished from the past month, it has finally given me a chance to settle down and observe things with a little more clarity around me. Lab work certainly hasn’t improved that much, but on the plus side my social life was running a little hotter than I thought it had been, despite what I may have been thinking.

I had been killing a lot of time with Team HGT1 (aka Greg/Rob/Kelly) since late spring between running 5K’s, getting food and beers, or hitting up concerts2, and it spoils me for what I think typical social interaction is these days while I’m slaving over my graduate degree. Amidst all that, it at least appeared that through meeting a few new people (and rekindling some old friendships that have been nearly detached for a while), I got the little ego boost I needed to get me going again and out of the sulk and misery I’d been entertaining amidst the stress of the move. Moving in with a complete stranger contributed to part of it, but I’ve since learned that we get along okay so far, which was my biggest worry3. Running into a young woman at the Canalfest 4-miler that I since met up with after the RMH road race as well will help at least give me another socialization partner for the races in the absence of Team HGT, if not in other activities outside of road races. Making a new friend was a pleasant change, so hopefully that will grow some as well. Adding to the third piece of the pie was just learning that someone would consider recommending me as datable material, which was pretty heart-warming as I haven’t had any really strong signs of that for a while4.

I know I am a pretty decent guy, but those little reminders outside my inner circle of friends really help strike it home. I always used to think it took significant amounts of getting to know me to see something appreciable, but this helps me realize it’s not so many skins deep5. I just need to learn to roll with it more, and not be quite so skittish in public. A singular impression isn’t really going to make or break me (or at least shouldn’t).

Unfortunately for me now, Team HGT is all but disappeared now. Greg, Rob, and Kelly (as with the rest of the Gill lab) have moved on to Rochester. Hopefully Rob will be finishing up with his research in the next month or so and can start writing his dissertation. Greg and Kelly are still in their earlier years, so they’ll be in Rochester for the long haul. Regardless, they’ve really been my social circle since late fall/early winter last year, so it’ll be a sad while not having them conveniently nearby to hang out with. Thankfully with the recent ego boost, hopefully that will spurn solitude and encourage meeting some more people out and about (whenever I manage to get out more, that is). I’ve never been super-awesome at meeting people and making new friends, but it’s going to be a lonely6 year if I don’t accrue a few more. Tom will still be around, but he’ll be busy writing his dissertation for a few months, and he already has a pretty active social life of his own right now. I seem to be scraping by these days, but there’s mixed feelings about that.

So. Social life is highly unstable right now. I may or may not have some avenues to attempt to chase after for dating. I am cautiously skeptical7, but at this point I think I just need to do away with the skeptical portion of it and just treat it as cautious. Skepticism hasn’t done me that much good as of late. Time to ditch that like a bad habit!

1HGT = Horizontal Gene Transfer. Liz is also part of this team, but I’ve only gotten the pleasure of sharing a single road race with her just yet. I’m not sure how many people really get the joke about the team name when we put that on our race applications, but it sure does set them snickering! Little do they know: we’re hardcore microbiologists (‘cept Liz, who’s going to be hardcore doctor)!

2We also hit up the free Our Lady Peace concert up in Lockport earlier on where I got to see The Hours completely by surprise (OMG!), and I forget all the random other stuff we hang out and do. I sometimes wonder if I’m not getting early onset Oldtimers or something. =P

3Which I’m sure many people would be at least a little worried about, unless they’re a complete nihilist. If that’s the case, then I’m boobytrapping any future apartment in case they decide to completely disrespect or shit all over my stuff. All’s fair in nihilism and war, verdad?

4Last case of that was the bartender who served us at the Thirsty Buffalo back when Rob and I went out after I finished moving into my new apartment. She wasn’t blatantly forcing herself on me or anything, but Rob adamantly encouraged me to get her number as she kept dropping pick-up bombs of “since I’m single” and “not seeing anyone right now” into many of her stories. Unfortunately, she never showed at the bar I was to meet her at the following night, and kind of kept dodging around a solid time to meetup outside of her work hours. In retrospect, she may well have been just trying to reap a little more tip money and/or visits on her shifts to earn her more.

5Geeks (or maybe just me) are like onions: we have many layers! (name that reference)

6Lonely or torturesome on my poor roommate. I’ll be clinging to the television and Nintendo Wii, or mooching off of her company/social life. I’m not sure if I have enough books, random side projects, and stuff to fix to keep me entertained all winter long! Maybe it’ll just be a mild’ish winter, and I can take plenty of walks…

7My default stance on many social interactions has always been cautious optimism. Probably explains why my dating life has been so devoid in general. “Oh, psh, she’s just being nice. That’s all!” *epic facepalm* Also, out of consideration to avoid inconveniencing others, I’ve also avoided making the first move until I’m >90% confident that I’ve got permission/access to move in. That’s just a travesty I don’t even have to explain!

I always keep talking about posting more, and I always keep failing at that. Less of a promise now, and more just a hope that I will. My weeks pan out to busier than they expect to be, and on the ones that I’m free, I’m too lazy to do anything with them. I could afford to mix it up a tad, or something. I’ll just add that to the never ending list of “notes to self.”

Last week wasn’t too bad, aside from the exhaustion part of it. Friday before last (7/23/2010) I participated in the Canalfest 4-mile Tim Frank Memorial run and added that to my growing repertoire of completed road races. I’m far from being able to jog/run an entire race, but a) my pace is slowly picking up with each road race, and b) I’m slowly making it farther at the initial run of the race before I have to take a walking break. With my latest road race last Wednesday (the Ronald McDonald House 5K, despite complications1), I finally slipped under the 12-min mile average pace, and I was pushing something along a 10′ish-minute mile for the entire first mile. I was rather pumped by this news! However, between the close temporal proximity of those two road races and the “fun run” practice run I did on Monday2, I really had no energy left for the week and my tibialis anterior was a little sore and tender from all the work.

Adrienne came up and crashed for the weekend, as we had pre-planned with Greg and Kelly to attend the Kings of Leon concert at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center on Friday evening, showcasing the opening bands The Stills and Built to Spill. At $70 a ticket, the show was a bit pricy. I only caught half of The Stills on stage3, but they were great to see nonetheless. Built to Spill was much as I was expecting, considering their latest album There is No Enemy is what I’ve heard the most of from them. Kings of Leon was fairly good, but I’m not a huge listener of their music4, and their rock became somewhat predictable as I listened to their songs I was unfamiliar with. And as Adrienne said, the fireworks at the end were pretty paltry for a rock concert5. All in all, good show all around, but probably not worth the money shelled out for the tickets.

There’s more stuff I’d like to dip into, but my shitty sleeping repertoire lately is causing me to try to rectify that situation and become better rested so I can recover a little more effectively from this new attempt at a running habit. I think those other posts will just have to wait on an expectant attempt to post repeatedly this week as long as I can remember to!

1The sky darkened rather rapidly prior to the race with a heavily suggested chance of heavy rain and potentially strong thunderstorms. Not more than 5 minutes into the run, the rain started to come down, and kept raining substantially for roughly 30 minutes. First run in a drenching rain, ever. Best time ever, but also the most exhausting. Once my shoes were soaked through, I was concerned about the leaden lift with each stride of my legs, and mostly about the possibility of developing some evil blisters.

2I’m running on a bit of a “high on life” kick, and so when I got home and my roommate was busy using the kitchen to make herself some dinner, I decided to go off on my first practice run since I started running these road races. I also wasn’t intending to run a road race two days later, so I would have reconsidered that fun run had I planned things out a little further than two days. That pushed me up to something like ~11 miles within a week. I haven’t ran that much in even a two month period, let alone within a period of six days!

3Pre-gaming the concert had us coming into the venue a little late. I personally thought The Stills would’ve been the middle act of the three as I thought they were a bigger deal than Built to Spill, despite the fact that The Stills have only been around since 2000 with three albums, and Built to Spill has been around since 1992 with a lot more albums. Oops!

4I have really only heard their music on the radio and on XM radio, so I was familiar with only maybe five or six of their songs en totale. I like some of their songs, but they remind me too much of Nickelback after they left their good ol’ post-grunge music and went popular mainstream rock. Booo!

5Adrienne has been to far more mainstream venues than myself. Every venue I have been to to date has had a maximum capacity of no more than a couple thousand, whereas she’s been to some pretty big shows, including Green Day, Dropkick Murphys, and Weezer just to name a few!

I’m completely moved out of the old apartment now. I just turned in the keys last night, and will soon be receiving my deposit back, and then I can completely forget about all of the move. Unfortunately, my body’s suffering pretty badly from it. I went on a fairly long bike ride Sunday and ruined my quads; they have never burned so badly in my life before, short of maybe a time or two during my years taking weight-training in high school. I only had Monday to recover from that (and they did little of that). Between hauling down a 4cu.ft. fridge, recliner, 24″ CRT television, two garbage totes of garbage, 4 large boxes of over random garbage, and then a full car load’s worth of stuff to take back to my new place, my quads resumed their burning and my feet ached to the point I couldn’t really feel them anymore.

So, I’m stuck recovering from that mess while that last car load of stuff is just piled up in the den/office room. That, and I can’t sit for too long, otherwise my legs in general start acting all weird and aching. I really need to get off my feet though; they’ve been killing me yesterday and today. Despite the fact I’ve lost ~15lbs. since I started moving a month ago, I think I’ve just stressed them too much. I need to rest them up before the weekend; the Italian Festival is going on just a half-block from my new place! I have to be able to go check that out at least!

Just having finished out the 14th DNA Replication and Repair Symposium this weekend, things can finally slow down a little bit. Between moving, the meeting, and putting up a guest for the meeting, everything has mushed into a blur.

Three weeks later, and I’m nearly finished moving. There’s a small handful of items leftover at my old place to be moved1, some items that need to be donated/thrown out, and then obviously have to finish cleaning the apartment. I had some ambitions to get that done prior to the end of the month and see if I could just forego paying for the last half-month of rent there2, but that is appearing a bit less likely. I have three days left to try and get that finished in, still need to get the Jetta’s title transfer taken care of, help a friend move a sectional before the end of the month, and I’m really far too spoiled with reading books and enjoying the weather now that there is a balcony attached to the new apartment.

All that PITA stuff that I was groaning over? Well, it all got moved. Even the entertainment center. I was quite seriously considering selling/getting rid of it, but when Rich came over to help me get my bed, table, and shelving units moved, his ambition completely abolished those thoughts. His lil’ man-truck was loaded to the brim. Really. The tailgate closed with less than an inch of clearance to everything that was stashed in it3. I really cannot thank him enough for getting all the major stuff moved over to my new place. My supporting squad of helpers was less than usable, as Greg and Rob were the only ones who showed up4, so Rich and I really packed everything and moved everything in that afternoon. I still owe him a case of beer for that sometime, whenever I drop by for dinner again.

Keeping this short for now. Got more stuff to do. I need to drop these in quicker and shorter. Might as well start trying!

1Random computer stuff, a 4cu.ft. fridge, plastic shelves to give away, grill, and even more random kitchen items (I really need to cut down on kitchen stuff).

2My former landlord was pretty cool about that stuff. One time I got my rent check in late, forgot what the late fee was and left him a note saying I’d drop off the late free tomorrow, and he texted me later that evening and said don’t worry about it! I’ll sort of miss him; he was an awfully laid back and enjoyable fellow (not to say my new one isn’t).

3Entertainment center and hutch, queen mattress, both box springs, two big IKEA shelf units, both bedroom nightstands, the dining room table; that truck was piled wide and high, both!

4To clarify, they showed up just after Rich and I were coming down after showing Rich around the apartment. Which was after we moved the last of the stuff in. So much for timing…
